Teaching a child social skills

As babies develop into toddlers, they are constantly learning about the world around them. When they become older, they will start to interact more with children of their own age and develop friendship groups. They will eventually have specific friends who they enjoy playing with and naturally gravitate towards. It is important to show children how to be sociable and play well together from a young age so that this becomes part of their normal routine.

Creating sociable children

There are a number of ways you can help your children be more sociable, even if they are naturally fairly shy. It is important to work with your children and build up social activities based on what they enjoy doing.

  • Be as sociable as you can at home by encouraging children to help you as much as possible. Even doing something as simple as the housework can show them how to work together.
  • Make sure that you’re setting the right example with how you act towards others. Always remember to be polite and respectful to those you come into contact with.
  • Being affectionate towards your children will encourage them to open up and enables them to foster more friendships.
  • Praise good social skills, such as saying “please” and “thank you” without being prompted.
  • Reduce competitiveness amongst friends and siblings by not always giving items to them equally. Instead, you should do so based on need.
  • Encourage them to share their toys and toddler games with friends who come to play.
